Suzanne Lewis Cranford is no stranger to blood donation. As a nurse, she transfuses lifesaving blood to patients all the time. As a blood donor, she gives blood whenever she can. Little did she know that she’d be on the receiving end of blood donation. Suzanne experienced something no mother would ever want to experience. She and her newborn daughter were both fighting for their lives after the baby’s delivery. First, baby Kaylee had surgery to remove a blood clot that was swelling on her tiny organs. Just days after bringing Kaylee home from the hospital, Suzanne began to hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital where she works. During emergency surgery, she received nine units of blood and six units of plasma. Three days after the operation she received two more units of blood. Suzanne and Kaylee both recovered. They are settling into their life as a family along with Suzanne’s husband Brice. But Suzanne will never forget how blood donors saved her life. Members of the community haven’t forgotten either. Earlier this summer United Blood Services and the young family’s church hosted a replenishment blood drive in her honor. During the drive more than 100 blood donations were collected. Soon Suzanne will go back to work. Most likely, she’ll never look at a unit of blood the same.
